Book Review | The Beast Within
The Beast Within: A Tale of Beauty’s Prince by Serena Valentino
The Beast Within tells the story of how the beast from Beauty and the Beast came to be. If you don’t know the Beauty and the Beast story I’m sorry but we can’t talk, I don’t have time to explain it to you. Please go pick up a book or at least watch the film. Everyone should know the fairy tales and I mean all the fairytales!!
This book has me conflicted as we find out about the Beast before he met Belle it is clear he is a terrible person and I found myself wanting to give him a slap. As the story progresses I do start to feel for him and find myself wanting things to work out for him and Belle. I understand and connect with Circe the enchantress who cursed him but then the story loses me towards the end when she softens. This is probably because I’m more likely to be a hardcore Disney villain than a Princess needing to be rescued or waiting to fall in love.
While the book follows the familiar story we are used to seeing in the film there are some additional dimensions to further the story. We get to see a different perspective seeing more from the beast than we would normally see.
If you like fairytales and Disney stories but aren’t too attached to the original and are open to seeing it from a different perspective then give this a go. The language is simple and easy to understand making it a good read for a younger audience as well as adults to enjoy. It is a quick read and keeps good pace throughout however I would’ve liked to have seen more. The story is told mainly in flash back and we could’ve seen more character development and scenes giving more of an incite into the beasts life. It is a quick fun read and I’m giving it 3 stars.
